THE OPPORTUNITY

Born in Michoacán, Mexico, Mariell Guzman is a mixed media painter, muralist, illustrator & installation artist currently based in Dallas, Texas. Her Mexican heritage deeply influenced her relationship & interaction with art & her personal experiences with the diversity of artistic expression in Mexico heavily shapes the development of her creative process.

CultureHype set out to let people know that Mariell, while a successful muralist, offers so much more. 

THE DEVELOPMENT

CultureHype wanted to focus on generating awareness for Mariell’s newest installation, “Synthetic Aesthetic” at Fort Worth’s Art South Box, a previously converted shipping gallery. The public art installation was located near Fort Worth’s Southside neighborhood, which has received a cultural district designation from the Texas Commission of the Arts. 

The 24-hour interactive installation was inspired by Mariell’s passion for nature & the environment. The immersive “jungle” experience was made out of recycled & repurposed materials like plastic, foam & aluminum & included both lights & sound. Guzman wanted to highlight the sometimes toxic relationship humans have with nature. The installation set out to point out humans’ objectification of nature's aesthetics. 

ADAPTING TO CIRCUMSTANCES + THE RESULTS

After months of mandated stay at home orders, Mariell’s installation was the perfect, safe excursion for Fort Worth residents. CultureHype set out to partner with Art Tooth to provide a COVID-friendly installation with social-distancing protocols.

CultureHype successfully positioned Mariell as an artist to watch in Dallas-Fort Worth by highlighting her diverse background & unique artistry. In the process, CultureHype was able to gain traction on Mariell’s next venture - textiles. CultureHype is currently working towards a future group show & textile collection with Mariell to continue positioning Mariell as more than a muralist. Mariell is currently collaborating with 7/11 for their new 7/11 Space Invader initiative. Mariell will be painting several exclusive murals with 7/11 across the Dallas-Fort Worth area that will be featured in their local stores.
