Deep Vellum Books

THE OPPORTUNITY

Deep Vellum books is an indie bookstore in the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, TX. The store has its own publishing house called La Reunion focused on Texan authors and operates within a brick and mortar location and online storefront. The indie bookstore came to us with a focus on bringing regional attention to their authors, creative events, and book releases while highlighting unheard Texas stories and voices. There was a special call to action within one book called, The Accommodation, a previously banned book with a special history on race relations in the city that Deep Vellum was republishing after 30 years.

THE DEVELOPMENT

In recognizing the Texas stories and literary specialties the store has to offer, CultureHype was able to promote the books The Accommodation: The Politics of Race in an American City; ELPASO: A Punk Story; and I See You Big German: Dirk Nowitzki and What He Means to Dallas (And Me). The list continues on as the fall & winter season will incorporate five more releases to which our team will promote on social media, plan creative book launch events and continue to feature in major new sources across the city. In Deep Vellum’s time with CultureHype, the bookstore and company was also named “Best Publishing House” by the Dallas Observer.


CultureHype was also able to coordinate a main event with sponsors like KERA, D Magazine, and Communities Foundation of North Texas, for the release of the highly-anticipated re-release of The Accommodation: The Politics of Race in an American City. The book represents an important part of Dallas history and the angle of having conversations with author Jim Schutze and Dallas City Commissioner John Wiley Price was engaging and important to note for audiences all over. The coveted book has since sold out and Deep Vellum is set to release a second run of copies, making it the most successful book launch in its history.

THE RESULTS

CultureHype was able to communicate Deep Vellum Books as one of the most innovative and diverse book stores in the DFW metroplex. As an in-house publishing company and bookstore, CultureHype was able to generate a following in Dallas’ diverse community for being one of the up and coming businesses for the community made by the community.
